Last year's success of our annual Wolf Ridge Ski Patrol picnic at the Wolf Ridge pool facility brings us back to the patio at the top of the mountain. The cookout will be held from noon to 6 PM, at which point we have to be off the patio for other scheduled groups. We have full access to the pool again this year for $3 per swimmer. Drinks and grill fare will be provided by the patrol. Bring your swimsuit and favorite dish to pass! This is an "alcohol free" venue. Bring the entire family!
In addition to the cookout and swimming, we had lawn games like Wodecki's "Screaming Chicken" corn-hole slingshot game. Kids and adults alike had a blast. Check out the photos to see some of the fun from last year.
Please RSVP by May, 30 (memorial day)!
If you are unable to attend, please email your proxy vote so you will be counted. As of yet, the only candidate for assistant patrol director is Bill Brazil.
Now that Randi has been released from her duties as Patrol Rep., she is revisiting the North Carolina NSP specialty license plate project. If you are new or just haven't signed the petition yet, WE NEED YOU! Please email your name, address, email address and number of vehicles you will be ordering a plate for, and she will put you on the list. In order to submit the plate to the state in Raleigh, we must have 300 signatures. So far, we've already collected 290! Once through legislation, we must sell 300 plates before they will print. We need everyone in NC to participate!

Let it snow
Let it snow
Let it snow.....

For everyone who has ended their emails with, "think snow" or, "let it snow," we did it! Not only do we have the snow, it won't stop! As of 2 PM, around 5 inches had been reported. A guest walked up to a group of patrollers asking, "How long will they have the snowmakers on today?" The patrollers simply laughed and said, "As long as they can!"
The non-stop snow falling from the sky, and the ongoing snowmaking on the mountain seemed to bring a constant onslaught of frozen precipitatio n into the aid room. On 17 different occasions, Matt Piscatelli could be seen mopping the aid room floor while attempting to keep everyone accountable for the snow and ice dripping from their frozen bodies.
The opening weekend attracted 23 volunteer patrollers. The snow gods brought forth sleet, freezing rain, fog, and quite a bit of snow. The resort provided the appropriate amount of man-made snow to ensure a long, long season. Even now, the forcasters are predicting more snow on the way with prolonged, colder temperatures. If we continue to see this winter weather, next weekend's guests should see a fully opened mountain.
Jerry Stamey, who is known to be an interesting individual in his own right, was NOT seen on the mountain, however. He spent the majority of the weekend camped out in the lockerroom's new restroom. Since we know how that sounds, we feel the need to clarify a bit; with the help of Beth Thomas and Randi Lowery, Jerry has spent many hours installing a new restroom for the patrol. Other helpers learned basic tiling skills, experienced classic Stamey stories, and generally had a great time. The giant hole in the ceiling of the lower floor bathroom was a bit of an inconvenience for a while, but in the end (no pun intended), it was worth the wait.
The day is coming to a close, and the patrollers are all looking forward to next week for some even better ski conditions. We look forward to seeing you on the slopes and, as always, THINK SNOW!!

With the changing leaves and cooling temperatures, Fall is the final step before the Patrollers at Wolf Ridge descend upon the snow-capped NC mountains. This weekend, Nov. 14-15, the Wolf Ridge Ski Patrol and other area patrols come together for the annual Outdoor Emergency Care Refresher. With a 30% increase in attendance from last year, the program should be more exciting than ever.
Please bring the following:
- OEC Card
- Current CPR for Medical Professionals Card
- Completed Cycle B insert in your latest "Ski Patrol" magazine, or from www.nsp.org.
- NSP Dues (payable by check or exact change).
- Stocked patrol belt/vest
If possible, please complete and submit the Member Update Form online before Friday. This will speed up the registration process Saturday morning.

Happy 10/10/10!
I have started training to run the Walt Disney World Marathon (26.2 miles) on January 11, 2011 with Team in Training. This is a division of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is a great cause, as it helps people with blood cancer in multiple ways, including research to find a cure. They rely on fundraising, from Team in Training, Light the Night, and other fund raising events.

I knew it would be improbable to complete marathon training by myself. When I found out about Team in Training I knew this was the way for me to complete my marathon. I would be runnin g not just for myself, but for people that I have known that have been diagnosed with some form of blood cancer. We have an honoree that we are running for. It happens to be our coach’s daughter, Lauren. After being out of treatment for 5 years, in May of 2010, Lauren is considered cured from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.
I need your help in raising the required $3,000 pledge to run the Disney Marathon. This is a tax deductible contribution to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Please do this one of two ways:
- By signing on to my secure WEBSITE now and donate.
- Send a check made out to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
For those of you that are willing to do more on 10/10/10, I would like to challenge you to send this to at least 10 of your friends, a hundred if you are willing, and ask them to donate $10, $20, $50 or more.
I want to thank you in advance for any support that you can give me! I did complete the Asheville Citizen Times Half Marathon and am looking forward to the Disney Marathon. I have been training every week for several months and will continue until race day!
Thank you,
Kevin Franks
